There are many ways to choose the best keywords. An obvious place to start is with keyword research. The best keywords are keywords that are relevant to your website and have a good combination of high, medium and low searches.

Doing really good keyword research is an art and takes time to perfect. It’s always best to learn the keyword research basics before you step into more advanced areas like learning about formulas. Just for fun, here is one of the more common formulas, Keyword Efficiency Index: KEI = (volume of searches per day)^2 / (total number of competitors).

Keyword Types from Big Head to Long Tail – General, Specific, Comparing, Competitor and Geo

  • General keywords are one to two word keywords which bring in a lot of visits but don’t have a high conversion rate. These are highly competitive and take time to secure. These types of keywords are also known as big head keywords.
  • Specific keywords are a few or more words which don’t bring in a lot of visits (unless they are local, branded or review) but have a high conversion rate. Think buy, sale, specifically naming a product or service.
  • Comparing keywords are words which are like specific searches in the way that they can have good conversion potential and like general searches can bring in a lot of traffic. Think best, VS, etc.
  • Longtail keywords are specific searches, usually searches that have never ever been done before and have the best conversion potential. These types of keywords are also low search volume since almost every long tail search is unique.
  • Competitor or manufacturer keywords can have a lot of search volume if the brands are built up. Securing branded keywords can be very profitable if done correctly and cleverly. Keywords that search engines suggest and trends are also important to consider.
  • Geo keywords are keywords that can be of any type above, but with a geographical location associated with them. These kinds of keywords can be high search volume and high conversions. These types of keywords are also known as golden nugget keywords.

Sometimes keywords are also misspelled (either way off or using a different country), typed incorrectly, or someone is searching for something incorrectly so we have to include clever ways of getting a website to rank for these keywords. Understanding semantic keyword research can play a big role.
