If you are wondering how to do keyword research, then you have come to the right place. Before we get started, in a previous post we talked about how to choose the best keywords. If you don’t already know what the different types of keywords are, (big head, long tail, golden nugget), check out that article.

Once you have an understanding of the different types of keywords, you will then need to find and organize them. If you are a little bit familiar with keyword research, you may be choosing keywords based on high search volume or super-specific ones. Let us tell you if you haven’t heard already, that you need to be mixing these keywords up and include each type of keyword in your research.

Here is a step by step list of how to do keyword research, or how we do it anyway:

  1. Review the website you are doing keyword research for
  2. Determine the webpage that you would like to target
  3. Take the main theme of the page you want to target and enter it into a keyword tool
  4. Remove irrelevant keywords
  5. Organize main topics into tabs
  6. Organize each tab into groups
  7. Select primary keyword for each tab, usually high searches and competition
  8. Select secondary keywords for each tab, usually the lowest searches and competition
  9. Create a mini main and blog structure for each tab
  10. Merge common tabs together
  11. Copy the primary keywords from each tab and put them onto a new tab
  12. Copy the secondary keywords from each tab and put them onto a new tab
  13. Create a main and blog website structure

How Thorough Keyword Research Will Ensure Content Relevancy

Once you have completed the steps above, you can go many, many layers deeper and repeat the process for all of the high search volume keywords throughout the tabs. Repeat this process until you are returned to the same keyword you have already included in your research.

When Am I DOne Researching a Topic?

When you are returned the same keywords you have already researched. This is how you know when you are done researching a particular topic, at least for a year anyhow. You will also need to complete the process above for every webpage, including blog posts to ensure you are completing keyword research to its fullest potential.

How Do I Know What to Write About?

If you follow this process, you will never run out of things to write about, and you will show search engines that your content is relevant. Be sure to have a good writer on hand, poor content won’t fool anyone and it must be high quality if you want it to rank well. Stay tuned for these upcoming posts:
