Learning how to do keyword research is a bit like science. There are a lot of moving parts and each action you take will affect the outcome of something down the line. Because of this, it is a process that needs to be done right, the first time. We don’t want any Bunsen Burner accidents or beaker explosions, now do we?

Keyword research is a website marketing skill that will reward you time and time again. Everyone does differently, and our perspective is unique. When we do keyword research, we are very thorough, so thorough that we not only do site wide keyword research, but keyword research for each and every webpage. We continue with this process until all of the keywords for a specific topic have been covered. We know this circle is complete when we type in a keyword into a keyword tool and are delivered keywords we already have. This process can take months, but you will rank for each and every keyword if you do this, including highly competitive keywords. Some keywords are worth as much as $10,000 once secured.

Good VS Bad Keyword Research – Learn and Include the Different Types of Keywords

There is definitely a difference between good keyword research VS bad keyword research. Good keyword research has a combination of different types of keywords that people will type into search engines. Bad keyword research will only focus on 1 or 2 types of keywords and miss the others. In order to start doing keyword research you need to understand the different types of keywords that are out there.

  • General Keywords – High search volume, high competition, low conversions. These keywords are best used for your homepage and main category pages. These types of keywords consist of 1-2 words. They take time to secure since they are so competitive. These keywords are often referred to as big head keywords.
  • Specific or Buying Keywords  Generally low search volume, low to medium competition, high conversions. These keywords are best suited for landing pages or web pages that are a few or more words which don’t bring in a lot of visits (unless they are local, branded or review), but have a high conversion rate. Think buying, selling, specifically naming a product or service
  • Comparing Keywords – Can be varied search volume, varied competition and varied conversions. These keywords are best suited for smaller pages that support main content and can either be smaller blog posts or blog categories. These types of keywords can have good conversions, but not as much as specific or buying keywords. Content plays a major role in conversions with these types of keywords
  • Longtail Keywords – These kind of keywords don’t really bring in a lot of of traffic. They are very specific keywords that have almost always never been done before. They are high converting and low search volume
  • Competitor or Brand Name Keywords – Can have a lot of search volume if the brands are built up. Securing these types of keywords can be very profitable if done correctly and cleverly.
  • Local Keywords – Keywords that have a country, city or neighbourhood included in them. These types of keywords are best used for pages that contain specific content about or targeting a location. Sometimes they are high search volume, and competitive, other times not. These kinds of keywords are generally high converting

How to Handle Keywords That Come Up That Use Incorrect Terminology – Semantic Keyword Research

Let’s talk strategy. Sometimes people don’t know what they are searching for and will type in incorrect terminology for a topic. As part of writing and optimizing well written content, you need to integrate the incorrect terminology into your content, and then correct it with the right term. This is sometimes referred to as semantic keyword research. This will ensure you still get the visits and keep your reputation in tact by offering up a bit of education. When visitors see that you know your industry this helps to build trust. It’s always a good thing when your visitor learns something new.
